They Shoot Zombie Tramps, Don’t They?
Sorry, friends. Narrator here. I had to interrupt the last chapter there. I suppose October was doing a passable job outlining the most pedestrian of details and happenings, but she was about to end the chapter with a moment resembling human warmth or emotion, and that’s just not the kind of thing that happens in The Dead Kid Detective Agency. You’ll be happy to know what follows is more of the expected minor thrills and pratfalls and abject horror.
But, yes, it was Friday night: dance night! And October was all gussied up in a black dress and black gloves and even blacker eyeliner and a blacker mood, because her dead friends were tagging along, and it was almost certain they’d destroy something or other. They were all about busting stuff up. To minimize property damage and ghost sightings, after her dad dropped her off in the school parking lot, October met with her dead friends to go over some basic guidelines. This was annoying for two main reasons: 1) she’d have much rather walked into the school dance with her friends Yumi and Stacey, like a regular person; and 2) it was February, you might recall, and standing outside in a dress, even with a heavy black peacoat over top, was unpleasant. October had also dragged along her backpack, which — while not appropriate dance attire — did contain most of her post-dance ship exploration supplies, like flashlights, Cyril’s note, and her trusty Two Knives, One Thousand Demons notebook.
“We need to go over the rules,” October insisted.
“Rules?” Kirby said.
They’d decided to meet behind Sticksville Central, as it was fairly close to the entrance to the gym, where the Valentine’s dance was taking place, but it was also close to the dumpster, where the incredible stench of a school’s worth of garbage made it a very unpopular teen hangout.
“Yeah, rules,” October said. “You’re dead. You can’t just walk in there and start doing the robot or whatever.”
“I don’t know what that means.”
“Besides, none of you are really dressed for a dance,” she added. “I guess Kirby’s got a dress shirt and tie. And you girls are wearing dresses, though they’re pretty … out of style. I suppose some kids will dress casual like Derek, too. But Cyril’s going to be an issue.”
“What is this issue?” he asked, generally curious both about the definition of the word and how it applied to this situation.
“Nobody wears tricorn hats anymore, Cyril … or whatever your pants are. This isn’t a Halloween dance. It’s going to be way hard for you guys to blend in for those people who can see ghosts.”
Cyril, looking very disappointed, took off his hat to examine it further, to see, perhaps, what had caused it to fall out of fashion.
“The rest of you can come into the dance — but only if you stick to the shadows. Luckily, it should be dark in there. And only if you behave. But Cyril, I think you’re going to look too out of place.
